Telecommuting is considered a new way of performing job functions outside of the office, either at home or at another location. The implementation of telecommuting has been growing as business owners have been making schedules more flexible and adopting measures to make it feasible. Thanks to business routers such as Reyee's, companies have been able to push this modality without difficulty.
The implementation of remote work can be important for companies for a number of reasons:
- Improved productivity: Some employees may work better in a quieter, less distracting environment in their own home, which can increase their productivity.
- Reduced positioning costs:Teleworking helps to reduce office rental, energy and supply costs, as well as commuting and transportation-related costs.
- Increased job satisfaction: Employees can have greater flexibility and work-life balance, which can improve their job satisfaction and retain them in the company.
- Talent pool expansion: Companies are able to hire workers anywhere in the world, giving them access to multiple talent options.
- Improved business resilience: Implementing telecommuting can help companies become more resilient to unforeseen situations, such as office closures due to a pandemic.
An enterprise network not only provides Internet connectivity to your employees, but it also allows them to access or communicate with various resources. These resources or services can be networked storage (network drives), customer management software (CRM), resource management software (ERP) and any other networked system. As soon as the employees of a company start telecommuting and connect from locations other than the corporate network, they no longer have communication with the aforementioned services.
Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are the solution to this problem. A VPN is a secure network connection that allows users to access a private or corporate network from a remote location using the Internet. This allows users to connect to their corporate or other private networks safely and securely, even when they are away from the office or on a public wireless connection. In addition, VPNs can also be used to hide a device's IP address and protect the user's privacy online. There are several brands of enterprise routers that allow the use of VPNs and some even have proprietary technologies for these connections.
Reyee's enterprise routers allow the configuration of VPN through several protocols. In this case and in order to implement teleworking in a simple and quick way, we will show the configuration of the OpenVPN protocol. Within the eWeb configuration interface of these routers there is a VPN -> OpenVPN section.
From this menu the VPN server parameters will be configured. These parameters are related to the network and security settings required to ensure that employees connect to corporate resources securely. In addition, a configuration file can be generated and then deployed to the employees' computers.
Each employee must have a VPN user and password, and these can be registered on the VPN Clients section.
Finally, the free OpenVPN software will be installed on each employee's PC and the configuration file, which was previously downloaded from the Reyee router, will be copied to its path.
Now employees can connect to the corporate network from their homes via the VPN connection, they only need their username and password.
Visiotech, networks and networking distributor, offers Reyee's wide range of business routers that can act as VPN servers with the main protocols on the market.
